The English Buildings Book is the most comprehensive single volume
on English architecture for the general reader and it celebrates
the English built environment, which is the richest and most
diverse in the world. Where most general books on English buildings
are arranged chronologically, The English Buildings Book is
arranged by building type and use. The chapters deal with distinct
groups of buildings from parish churches to railway stations. This
arrangement makes the book more accessible for general readers, who
will find it easier to navigate their way around a book arranged by
types rather than one organised by historical styles. The English
Buildings Book is truly broad in its coverage. Over 700 buildings
are described and illustrated, ranging from the architectural icons
- such as castles, cathedrals, and country houses - to the less
noticeable but equally fascinating buildings of our towns and
villages - parish churches and meeting houses, shops and hotels,
town halls and market halls, windmills and lighthouses, barns and
bars. All are represented in superb colour photographs, many
specially commissioned, which are arranged to enable easy
comparison between buildings with each double-page spread
presenting a theme that the reader can take in at a glance or read
about in greater depth. The English Buildings Book is also a
personal book; the author and photographer, who have collaborated
together for many years, have made their individual choice of
buildings. There are plenty of examples of each type and style,
allowing the reader to follow the evolution of architecture from
the Saxon period onwards. But there are also the architectural
'eccentrics' - houses shaped like aircraft hangars, mills that look
like palaces, stations or cinemas in the shape of 1930s radio sets.
The book is an architectural feast, from beginning to end.
A celebration of some of Britain's most loved and familiar
buildings, "Built for Britain" revels in structures as diverse as
the awe-inspiring Clifton Suspension Bridge over the Avon Gorge in
Bristol and a humble row of beach huts on a Norfolk shore.
From iconic landmarks to isolated lighthouses, these are often
unsung monuments to little-recognised talent and engineering
achievement. Many of them are beloved structures in the local
landscape, whether it is the Blackpool Tower, Ally Pally, the
towering concrete chimneys of the Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station
in Nottingham-shire, or the captivating spectacle of the Post
Office Tower. Continually rearing their outlines or silhouettes up
into our collective consciousness, these buildings have in many
cases not received the proper attention they so richly deserve.
Through their very familiarity and often eye-catching forms, all of
these structures, though, are guaranteed to engage and
intrigue.
A peculiar can be defined as something that 'has eccentric or
individual variations to the general or predicted pattern'. And, as
it turns out, London is overflowing with them. This pocket-sized
book will accompany you around the capital, guiding you from the
tent-shaped tomb designed for Victorian explorer Sir Richard Burton
by his widow, Isabel Arundel Gordon; to what may be the last
surviving porter's rest in London; to a stone niche by a
long-demolished foundling hospital where almost 15, 000 infants
were discarded over the course of the 18th century. Sometimes
heroic, sometimes tragic, often amusing and always unexpected,
these so-called 'peculiars' bring colour to the fabric of London.
Whether you are a lifelong resident or a visitor passing through,
London Peculiars is guaranteed to lead you on an adventure. Also in

As the world speeds up, as technology takes over, it is worth
remembering how we used to live. This three-book series is a
nostalgic hymn to an era when life was slower: a meandering ramble
through the British countryside by bicycle, automobile and train.
Take an amble across the countryside with this book, which
celebrates a time when our railway network was more than a
permanently delayed omnishambles of overcrowded and overpriced
trains. Country stations and lonely halts, milk churns and coal
yards, enamelled signs and platform clocks - these are the
fragments of a more leisured age, from a time when the local
station was a well-loved institution at the heart of so many
communities. Here are gas-lit rural stations, oil lamps on level
crossing gates, enamelled signs, waiting room fires, timetables and
luggage labels. Less a clattering, steamy ride into the past than a
touchstone for joyous memories of such a vital and well-loved
institution, The Slow Train harks back to a more measured,
considered era.
Railway Rhymes is probably the first time that the poetry of
railways has been brought together into one dedicated volume. Here
will certainly be found the old favourites - Philip Larkin's
'Whitsun Weddings', W.H. Auden's 'Night Mail', John Betjeman's
'Distant View of a Provincial Town', - but equally this little book
is stuffed with forgotten gems like Edmund Blunden's 'Two Wars' and
Patricia Beer's 'The Branch Line'. Divided up into chapters
entitled Navigation, Engineering, Waiting, Travellingand Musing,
Railway Rhymes is the perfect pocket companion for waiting room and
train compartment alike

This evocative volume gathers British motoring memorabilia,
transporting us back to a time when roads were filled with bulbous
Austin Somersets, humpbacked Standard Vanguards and unique road
signs. Between cigarette cards advocating road safety, vintage
motoring maps and black-and-white photos of classic cars in their
prime, Forgotten Motoring packs an impressive cache of
paraphernalia between its pages. A quaint, inspirational collection
with delightful images at every turn of the road. No Sat Nav here.

Squeeze the brakes, sit back and coast downhill with this
irreverent collection of cycling memorabilia. The Bicycle is packed
with pictures, fun facts, and light-hearted commentary, gathering
photographs of vintage bikes, John Bull puncture repair kits, and
misspelled signs rejecting the rights of 'Bycicles' to be locked to
railings. Crossing the country from Cumbria to Cambridge, this
quaint, pocket-sized manual is a compendium of all things
two-wheeled.
Have you ever wondered why you are here and what you are supposed
to be doing? We have published this book to bring you channelled
messages from a group of spiritual beings that call themselves "The
Circle of The Light of The Love Energy." We feel that what they
have to say will help you understand the answers to those
questions. We believe the messages are full of encouragement. They
guide and challenge us to discover our real selves. The overall
message is that the key to our progression on Earth is love. We
need to love ourselves. This will help us love others, thereby
achieving our purpose. Some of the messages also give interesting
information about the changes now happening to Earth and humanity
in 2012. The Circle of the Light of the Love Energy have even given
some messages in the form of poems. We feel sure they will touch a
chord with you as well. We have received much guidance from these
messages and we hope you will too. We live in an enlightening time.

People Smiling delves into the rawest, deepest emotions and
prejudices of those left behind to pick up the pieces, emotions and
prejudices that are sometimes frail, sometimes strong, sometimes
humorous but always with a passionately explosive undercurrent...
Angry People Smiling....
New Zealand trance medium Kay Meade channels messages of love and
guidance. The messages come from a group of spiritual guides who
call themselves 'The Circle of The Light of The Love Energy'. The
purpose of their messages is to awaken people to what they really
are - an eternal soul temporarily inhabiting a human body on Earth
so as to learn and develop spiritually through their experiences
here. The group's aim is to help raise the vibration of Earth and
humankind to a higher spiritual level where all interactions
between people are based on love. They have asked that their
messages be spread far and wide.
Currently, clinical training for undergraduates is becoming more
difficult. To be a good doctor with adequate training, one must be
exposed to many different patients with a variety of pathologies
and diseases. At present, we are unable to achieve this, mainly due
to the increase in the medical student cohort each year and fewer
in-patients. In short, the student-to-patient ratio is worsening,
thus lessening students' contact with patients and learning
experience. Fortunately, with the objective structured clinical
examination (OSCE) format, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
and examination have become more efficient. This book will be very
useful for students preparing for surgical OSCEs by covering the
different clinical scenarios that a certain condition might
present, and allowing self-testing of the questions as well as
learning from the provided answers.
